Last week, I read Nightshade (Catalia Book 1) by Michael Connelly (2025). This police procedural is the first of the Detective Stilwell thrillers.

I imagine a lot of you are familiar with Michael Connelly’s other series, including the Lincoln Lawyer and the Harry Bosch books. If so, you know this new series will not disappoint.

Detective Stilwell is a Los Angles Sheriff’s detective who’s been sent to work on Catalina Island off the coast of L.A. because of some attitude issues—he rocks the boat to do policing right and won’t let other cops take the easy way out to close a case.

One Monday after a busy tourist weekend, a body is found weighed down is a sack in the harbor, which begins an investigation the spans from the island and the city of L.A. and includes ultra wealthy yacht owners, local politicians, and manipulative gangsters.

Lots of deftly drawn characters and surprising action make this a real page-turner.
